Over the past few months we built FoundGPT, a Shopify app that tracks whether AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity actually mention Shopify stores when people ask them questions.
We have now collected data across 51 stores and 4,907 citations inside FoundGPT. Here is what the numbers show.
The basic reality
Only 11.8% of stores get mentioned by AI platforms at all. That means roughly 9 out of 10 Shopify stores are completely invisible when someone asks ChatGPT to recommend a product in their category.
For the stores that do get mentioned, the average rank position is 1.53. So when AI does mention you, it tends to mention you near the top. The problem is getting mentioned in the first place.
Which platforms mention stores most
ChatGPT and Perplexity cite specific stores more often than Gemini in our dataset. Gemini tends to give more generic category answers. If you are only optimizing for one platform you are leaving visibility on the table.
What the stores getting mentioned have in common
Across 1,208 domains classified in our citation data, the stores that appear consistently share a few things:
Their product descriptions answer questions, not just describe features. Their store structure makes it easy for AI crawlers to understand what they sell. They have content that matches how people actually ask AI questions.
Stores with thin product descriptions, no blog content and no structured data almost never appear.
What does not matter as much as you think
Store age and domain authority matter less than content quality for AI visibility. We have seen newer stores outrank established ones because their product descriptions are written in natural language that matches how people phrase questions to AI.
This is the gap FoundGPT’s AI Readiness Score is built to close — it grades your store across the 11 content signals AI platforms actually weigh, so a six-month-old Shopify store can score higher than a five-year-old one with thin descriptions.

What you can do right now
Check whether any AI platform actually mentions your store. Ask ChatGPT “what are the best stores for [your product category]” and variations of that question.
Look at your product descriptions. Are they written for humans browsing a page or for someone asking a question out loud? AI platforms prefer the second. For a full breakdown of what AI agents actually need read: llms.txt is not enough: here is what AI agents actually need from your store

Where FoundGPT fits in
The data in this post comes from FoundGPT itself. The app audits your Shopify store across the 11 criteria AI platforms use to decide who to recommend, generates your llms.txt, rewrites thin product descriptions with AI Auto-Fix, and tracks your ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mentions over time so you can see whether your changes are working.
The window is open
Most of your competitors have not started thinking about AI visibility yet. The stores that act now will be the ones AI platforms cite consistently when this becomes mainstream in 6 to 12 months.
